The Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network invites you to attend a lunch and talk: The Green Economy-How can we use Economics to Save the World? With Pavan Sukhdev and Miriam Lyons-Chaired by Professor John Thwaites
Pavan Sukhdev has said that the destruction of the natural world was "a landscape of market failures", because the services of nature were nearly always provided for free, and so not valued until they were gone. How can we use market mechanisms to value the environment? Come and hear the very latest thinking on Green Economics.
Pavan Sukhdev is Special Advisor and Head of the UN Environment Program's Green Economy Initiative, which seeks to demonstrate that the greening of economies is not a burden on growth but rather a new engine for growth, employment and the reduction of persistent poverty. Pavan is also Study Leader for the G8+5 commissioned report on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), a project he was appointed to lead in March 2008 by the EU Commission and Germany whilst still working fulltime at Deutsche Bank.
Miriam Lyons is the Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Development. Formerly the Policy Coordinator of New Matilda, Miriam has a long history of bringing policy ideas to new audiences, as the founding director of the Interface Festival of Ideas in Sydney, and director of the Ideas Program for the Straight out of Brisbane Festival. Miriam has also worked as a freelance writer and a media development consultant in East Timor with the international NGO Internews. She is on the steering committee of Project Australia. Miriam was recently profiled in the Thinkers' category of The Australian's Emerging Leaders.

Time: 9am - 4:30pm
Location: Sydney
View Map
Cost: $1,089.00 per attendee
Volunteers are the backbone of many human service organisations and nonprofits; they make many social programs possible and fill the void created by the withdrawal of the welfare system. Without volunteer participation, the services that are offered by many non-profit organisations would be unavailable or provided at higher cost to government, clients and tax payers. However, only a few organisations know how to motivate volunteers without offering material benefits in the third sector.
In this course Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal will expose participants to the major theories on volunteerism, different aspects of volunteer management, dilemmas and practical solutions. The course will focus on management and motivating volunteers.
The participants will be acquainted with theories and studies on the management of volunteers and will learn of the different aspects of having volunteers as an essential part of the organisation.

Melbourne's Road Home Forum III - What can we do to help?
Organisation:
Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation
Time: Registration 8.30am - 9.00am, Lunch 1.00pm, Finish 2.30pm
Location: RACV Club, Level 17, 501 Bourke St, Melbourne
Two years ago the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation embarked upon its homelessness initiative, Melbourne's Road Home. Launching with a forum in late 2008, we are now on the road to reducing homelessness - with time and energy we believe it can be eliminated.
The first forum focused on partnerships. Into the same room it brought government, philanthropy, not-for-profit, welfare, business, media, and interested community members. Momentum built from this first coming together and, at the 2009 forum - about hearing the voices of people experiencing homelessness - the Melbourne's Road Home Alliance was born. The Alliance is a group of respected community and business leaders, all of whom are concerned about the increasing number of Victorians living without a home, and are working to figure out what we can do to help.
On August 26 this year, the Melbourne's Road Home forum is turning three (no celebrating, though). It will be a day to see how far down the road we've come, and to answer the question: What can we do to help? By 'we' we mean everyone, from government to business to community and everyone in between.
Forum III will be structured according to the different life stages that people might be in when they experience homelessness. The keynote presentations will reflect some of these life stages: Growing Up - Kids Without a Home, Mid-Life - Focusing on Domestic Violence, and Getting On - Ageing & Homelessness.
Also, leading homelessness researcher, Associate Professor David MacKenzie, will present his latest findings. And there will be a speech on the importance of using plain English when talking and writing about social problems. The forum will conclude with a panel discussion. Panellists will be the keynote speakers from earlier in the day, plus a representative from government and a representative from the Alliance.
It would be wonderful to see you there ... What can we do to help?
Further Information: Please RSVP to Bill Snaddon, Social Policy Officer, LMCF, at bill.snaddon@lmcf.org.au or phone (03) 9633 0025, by Wednesday 4 August.

World Energy Congress, Montreal 2010 (Canada)
Organisation:
World Energy Congress
Location: Montreal, Canada
Responding Now to Global Challenges - Energy in transition for a living planet
The World Energy Council organizes a world congress every three years. This congress, the premier international multi-energy forum with exhibitors from the field, is an opportunity for participants to better understand energy issues and solutions from a global perspective. It brings together more than 2,500 top world leaders in the field of energy, coming from industry, governments, and international organizations, as well as the media, universities and energy industry associations.
The theme for WEC Montreal 2010 reflects the undeniable sense of urgency that faces the world's energy sector. More energy is needed from now until 2020, with prices rising significantly, while world energy demand is expected to double by 2050. One third of the world population does not yet benefit from reliable energy supply. The energy industry is faced with overwhelming environmental, social and political acceptability. In short, the situation is more challenging than ever.
With this situation in mind, the World Energy Council has set its 2008-2010 business goals & objectives accordingly : work toward responsible growth that reconciles economic development, environmental protection, and the reduction of global inequalities.

Inaugural National Indigenous Policy and Dialogue Conference
Organisation:
University of NSW - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and the Social Policy Research Centre
Location: University of New South Wales
Indigenous Policy and Dialogue: New Relationships, New Possibilities
Australia's colonial history has left us a challenging legacy, where contrasting worldviews continue to frame struggle and contestation between Indigenous people and the state.
Our philosophical and institutional frameworks are not suited to dealing with this legacy, and Indigenous policy remains problematic and contentious. As a consequence there is no process for reflection or re-examination of the relationship between Indigenous people and the Australian nation.
What might we now do to create a more just and reconciled society? How might we create new opportunities to transform the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people? What are the implications for policy making in this contested space?
The conference will be the first to be hosted by the recently established Indigenous Policy and Dialogue Research Unit (IPDRU) in the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW. IPDRU, headed by Patrick Dodson as founding director and Professor of Indigenous Policy, is engaged in a nation building research agenda, developing new narratives, institutions, practices, philosophies and opportunities for a more just and inclusive Australia, where Indigenous rights and interests are at the centre of Australian nationhood and embedded in the institutional fabric of the country.
