Topical Issues: Major Donations

Each year in Australia there are a handful of major philanthropic donations. These donations appear relatively prominently in the media, usually for a limited time.

On this page our aim is to gather all the information we can find on the individual donations at the time, providing somewhere you can go to find out the basics of the situation, and find links to further commentary and information.

Due to the comparatively brief coverage by the media of these major donations, information on them tends to not be updated beyond around a month after they occur. Dates have been provided to give you an idea of when information were last added.

The most recent donation is listed at the top.

Vizard Foundation gives proceeds of $5.4 million Nolan painting sale

A new record for the sale of an Australian painting at auction was set yesterday (25/3/2010) when Sidney Nolan's First-Class Marksman sold for $5.4 million. Sold by The Vizard Foundation, the painting had hung on the walls of the National Gallery of Victoria since 1993 on a long term loan from the Foundation. The NGV will benefit from the sale; the Foundation has said it will give a "substantial donation" from the proceeds to the gallery. According to the Australian Financial Review (26/3/2010, p. 3), the Foundation is also committing another unspecified share to a program for underprivileged communities and an Indigenous curator training program at the University of Melbourne.
