It is not necessary to have a foundation in order to be a giver. Over 13 million Australians, 86.9% of the adult population, gave a total of $5.7 billion in 2004. This figure does not include donations associated with the Tsunami appeals, nor funds raised by events, raffles and lotteries.
There are many ways in which individuals can give; donations of money or goods; donating time or skills; bequests. Individuals can choose to join with others via a Giving Circle, to donate directly from their pay packet, or to donate via intermediary organisations. You can find out about all these options in our Guide to Giving. In the meantime, you can explore your options via our Getting Involved section.
Philanthropy Australia has a number of individual philanthropists as members, and is able to offer a number of services which can assist, including:
- Community - the opportunity to meet like-minded people and to collaborate with other givers if desired
- Education, research and access to resources via our Knowledge Centre
- Promotion and advocacy - Philanthropy Australia works to increase public awareness of philanthropy and to encourage a conducive tax system for donors.
